Want to have fun while helping to save the oceans? Embark on
a whalewatch, snorkel tour to Molokini or Lanai, sunset dinner
cruise or stargazing adventure with the nonprofit Pacific Whale
Foundation.
Top rated by guidebooks and travel websites, Pacific Whale Foundation pioneered whalewatching and ecotourism on Maui in 1980, and has since introduced more than three million delighted guests to Hawaii’s whales and other marine wildlife.
You’ll travel on ultra-smooth, eco-friendly vessels, in the company of Pacific Whale Foundation’s enthusiastic and knowledgeable certified marine naturalists. Best of all, your ticket will help fund Pacific Whale Foundation’s work to protect our oceans through science and advocacy, and will support ongoing marine research, public education and conservation programs in Hawai’i and other parts of the Pacific.
Pacific Whale Foundation was born of the “Save the Whales” movement in the 1970s. From the start, Pacific Whale Foundation recognized the urgent need for scientific data about whales, and launched some of the first whale research studies in Hawaii. During the years that followed, Pacific Whale Foundation’s work in Hawaii, Alaska, Australia, Japan, Oceania, New Zealand and Ecuador has included studies of whales, dolphins, toothed whales, sea turtles and coral reefs. The results have been published in books and scientific publications, and have helped government management agencies develop effective laws and policies to protect marine wildlife.
Among Maui residents, Pacific Whale Foundation is recognized for the award-winning marine education opportunities it provides to local schoolchildren. “We’ve been providing marine education programs for Maui’s schools for more than three decades,” says Merrill Kaufman, Education Director at Pacific Whale Foundation. “Our goal is to inspire kids to love the ocean and to recognize the value of conservation.”
Pacific Whale Foundation’s educational programs focus on hands-on, science-based learning, and include tidepool explorations, whalewatches, wildlife watching cruises and at-sea learning programs, along with lab programs at Pacific Whale Foundation’s Discovery Center. In just three years, more than 7,000 local schoolchildren have embarked on educational whalewatches with Pacific Whale Foundation’s marine education team.
Conservation is woven into all aspects of Pacific Whale Foundation’s operation. Pacific Whale Foundation’s Ocean Stores and offices are equipped with energy-saving LED lighting. Locally grown, locally produced foods are served on the cruises whenever available, on “tree free/petroleum free” compostable plates, cups and utensils. Pacific Whale Foundation’s vessels are powered with low emission, low noise and high performance engines and are equipped with Whale Protection Devices. Recently, Pacific Whale Foundation was awarded the U.S. Coast Guard’s highest environmental award, the 2010 William M. Benkert Marine Environmental Bronze Award for Excellence for Outstanding Achievements in Marine Environmental Protection.
Discover more about Maui’s unique ocean environment by visiting Pacific Whale Foundation’s Coral Reef Naturalist program at Ulua Beach in Wailea, daily except Sundays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. And be sure to get out to sea on a Pacific Whale Foundation whalewatch or ecotour.
Penne Pasta is a casual dining experience with reasonable prices and good fresh Italian food. Located off the beaten path, yet still in the heart of Lahaina Town, this little Italian eatery is a favorite among locals. Here’s an easy recipe for Pasta Puttanesca from Owner and Chef Juan Gomez, who looks forward to welcoming you for lunch and dinner.
In a pan preheat olive oil. Add all ingredients except the pomodoro sauce and cook, stirring frequently, until garlic and onion are caramelized. Add tomato sauce, basil and penne pasta and let cook for 2 minutes on low heat. Add parmesan cheese (optional) and serve with toasted French bread.
